Painting by Ali Munsterhjelm

This large oil painting that portrays sailmaking was painted by Ali Munsterhjelm, a painter in Turku. He was famous for his paintings of the banks of the Aurajoki river. His family included seafarers, and he ached to take a long voyage around the world  just like his relatives had done. He had become acquainted with shipowners in the Turku society, and in 1913 he managed to talk himself on board 4-masted barque the Marion Lightbody, just purchased into Finland.
