A single seafarer’s fate in war was a matter of chance
Jaakko Peltonen (born 1927) brought his WW1-model field rucksack home to Pori in the autumn of 1945. His younger brother Markus said that the rucksack remained hidden in the attic for decades. It awoke painful memories of brother Jaakko’s fate in WW2 and of the consequences of the events to Jaakko. As in many seafarers’ experiences of internment, chance played a significant role in the chain of events.
