Beginning of seamen’s mission in Finland

At the beginning of the 20th century, a section was added to the rules of the Seamen's Mission Society, which made it possible to hire employees in Finland. Thus, in 1908, the operations expanded to domestic ports, where the work of the society was carried out by port missions and other independent associations. In addition to these, there were private seamen's homes and reading rooms for seafarers. Gradually, the functions became members of the Finnish Seamen's Mission Society. 

The largest customer group of domestic seamen's churches is made up of foreign seafarers. Other visitors include long-distance truck drivers, people working in the port areas, and groups from outside. The port chaplains of the seamen's churches also serve in the ports of nearby towns in their area.  

The Finnish Seamen Church of has seven locations in Finland: Hamina-Kotka, Kemi-Tornio, Kokkola, Oulu, Rauma, Turku and Vuosaari. In the Port of Pori, seafarers have been served by the port chaplain of Rauma since early 2020.
