Types of sailing ship: what are brig, fullrigger and schooner?

Most of us can probably distinguish between a sailing ship and a steam ship, but recognizing the various sailing ship types is more difficult. What is the difference between barque, brig and schooner? The ship types are distinguished by their rig, i.e. by how many masts they featured and what kind of sails they used.
